Black Garlic Onion Cheeseburgers
I've been a huge fan of black garlic ever since the first Blue Apron meal I ever got that contained it. Since then, I've used it in many experiments, the most recent being this burger recipe I created. The other day, I was watching a show where someone used a slice of onion in a burger and I wondered what I could pair that with to create a tasty burger. I wanted to include black garlic and decided to make it part of a sauce. Now, black garlic isn't the easiest to find. I happened to luck out and a store nearby got some in, so I bought a bunch. You can often find it in the international aisle of stores or you could always order it online. One might ask, what is black garlic? It's this marvelous beauty.
Lovely, isn't it? Black garlic is an aged garlic and is used frequently in Asian foods. It's taste is slightly sweet and savory. I do warn that black garlic is incredibly soft and you can easily cut it with a butter knife. The recipe I'm about to share with you was made up on the spot. I didn't measure anything, but I'll give you the basics of how I made these burgers.
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 sweet onion, sliced into three thin steaks
2 cloves black garlic, minced
1/4 - 1/2 cup mayo
3 slices of Munster cheese
Hamburger buns (potato buns or Hawaiin buns pair the best)
Salt and Pepper
Directions
- In a small bowl, mix mayo and black garlic. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Form ground beef into three patties and press down the middle so that the outer edges are raised.
- In a drizzle of olive oil in large pan over medium-high heat.
- Season burgers to taste with salt and pepper and add to pan. Cook without turning until bottom side forms a nice crispy crust, about 4-6 minutes.
- Press onion steaks onto each burger and carefully flip. Cover lightly and allow to cook another 5 minutes or so. Once the onion has started to caramelize and burgers are cooked through, added sliced Munster and cover for another minute to allow cheese to melt.
- If desired, toast hamburger buns.
- Place hamburger onto bottom bun, careful to keep onion in tact. Spread black galic mayo on top bun and place on burger.
- Enjoy with whatever sides you want.
